Flying squirrels are nocturnal. They eat a wide-variety of foods; and, they'll even visit your bird feeder. Most likely they have already. Tonight, I had two of them, climbing up and down an oak tree, and eating my mixed seed bird food.
Though similar in color to a gray squirrel, it's easily distinguished by its smaller size, larger eyes, large whiskers, from the shape of its head, white underbelly and the black line along its gray body. This black line represents the extra fold of skin that's used for gliding. Don't expect to see it glide while it's visiting your feeder. It'll climb the pole or attempt to jump to it just as a gray squirrel will. It averages about nine inches, and it's much lighter than the gray squirrel. The flying squirrel in the picture below is on a squirrel-proof feeder; the feeder bays are closed off from the weight of the squirrel. Due to the flying squirrel's lighter weight, however, this feeder isn't a flying-squirrel-proof feeder!
